The New Jersey State Prison was formerly called Trenton State Prison. It is a state men’s prison located in Trenton, New Jersey. The New Jersey Department of Corrections operates it.
This facility is one of the oldest prisons in the US. It is the State’s only prison with maximum security inmates entirely. It houses problematic and dangerous inmates. The prison has 1860 inmates.
The New Jersey State Prison has two security units. It provides a high level of custodial supervision and control. The facility also offers Professional treatment services like education and social work. The prison once allowed the Bureau of State Use Industries to operate a beddings and clothing shop in Shop Hall at the facility.
NJSP used to house New Jersey’s death row for men and execution chamber. The State abolished capital judgment in 2007.
New Jersey State prison records and files are kept well. They are always updated from when the inmate is arrested and moved until when released on parole. When a prisoner is medically tested, received visitors, appeared in court, or commit additional charges, their files are updated.

Correspondence via Mail/Package
Inmates can receive packages from as many people as possible. They can have 80 Posta stamps with them. The staff inspects all the incoming and outgoing mails. Always include your return address and your name.

Sending Money to Inmates
The money sent to inmates goes to their commissary accounts. It can be used to buy snacks/foods, hygiene items, clothing, stamps, stationery, electronics, etc.
You should know the inmate’s Name and his ID before starting the process.
Depositing funds through the mail is the cheapest way. United States Postal Money is payable to JPAY. JPAY does not charge any fee for processing. Add the inmate’s name and ID in the memo field. You will also fill a deposit slip. Mail the money order and the deposit slip to the JPAY address.
When sending money to an inmate’s trust account through the phone, call JPAY at 1-800-574-57299. You will be charged a small fee.
Phone Call Communication
Every inmate can make outgoing collect calls, debit calls, and advance pay calls. Prisoners pay for the debit calls. Receiver pays collect calls. Global Tel Link is a third-party service provider that offers the advance payment method. Inmates’ friends have to open an account with GTL and pay for the calls.
Inmates should not have more than ten numbers on their call list. All calls are recorded and monitored except legal ones.
To set up a GTL account, you can visit their website or call them at 1-800-483-8314. They will charge a fee for every call and a rate per minute.
Visitation at New Jersey State Prison
The NJSP has approved visitation to inmates. When an inmate is first incarcerated, they have to complete visit cards for all potential visitors. Inmates can update the list anytime.
To be included on the visiting list, the inmate should know your name, address, and date of birth. If the inmate does not know all your information, you can send them a letter on your information.
The facility will investigate all visitors. If you are a visitor, the inmate will inform you. When visiting, you must show a valid photo ID, driver’s license, State issued ID, passport, military ID, or a medical card.
All the visitors and their belongings will be searched and pass through a metal detector. Electronic scanning will be used to help prevent contraband from getting to the facility.
Mobile phones, cameras, music devices, recording devices, and electronics are not allowed in the facility. Tobacco, lighters, and matches are also prohibited.
Inmates can have contact visits where handshaking, a brief hug, and a kiss may start and end the visit. In contact visitation, there are two sessions on Saturdays and Sundays. The first sessions start from 9.30 am to 11 am. The second session starts from 1.30 pm to 3 pm.
The facility has a non-contact visit where visitors will talk to the inmates behind a glass. The general population inmates can be visited daily from 8 am-3 pm. Quarantined can be visited every day from 8 am-3 pm.
Those in protective custody have visitors on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.30 pm-8 pm. Administrative Segregation inmates receive visitors on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 6.30 pm-8 pm.
Hospital visits should be scheduled 24 hours earlier. They are limited to two people at a time. Children are not allowed.
Infrequent visitors can be granted a special visit. A member of the clergy of official visitors can visit anytime. The Warden is the only one to approve these visits.
When accompanied by children, you can have a plastic bottle, diaper, or wipes.
Contact Rules for the Visitors
Adherence to the dress code will provide a secure and safe visit for everyone. Failure to adhere to them, your visitation privileges will be revoked. Always have extra clothing while visiting.
Some rules include:
- Do not wear transparent, see-through, or fishnet.
- Do not wear skin tights, off-shoulders, midriff, torso, or black. Do not wear sleeveless shirts, low cut shirts, halter tops, low rise pants, spandex, or leggings.
- Skirts, dresses, and shorts should cover the knees.
- Do not wear hats or headgears except religious or medical gears.
- Do not wear clothes that resemble prison uniforms.
- Military and doctors’ uniforms are not allowed.
- Clothes with offensive languages or images are not allowed.
- If you are a drug, you will not be allowed to visit.
