Chester County Detention Center is located in the state of South Carolina. Chester Department of Correctional runs the facility. It houses over 2000 inmates in different dormitories. The facility has great medical services that ensure the inmates health is well taken care of.
Inmates can earn their GED, which will help assimilate into the society once they are released. Some of the courses include barbering, carpentry, and administrative office technology. Moreover, inmates can get counseling and therapy for both drug abuse and other mental diseases. The library, laundry room, and working area gives an inmate a comfortable stay at the facility.
Many of the inmates who are held in the facility are waiting for their trials to start soon. However, a few are in facility for more than five years. Detainees who are held here will get the chance to work and earn some money. Nonetheless, they will not be given the money as the administrators will hold it for them and only release it later. Moreover, working at the facility gives the inmate a good name and it will be an advantage once you are released.
You can send money orders to a loved one at any time. The money order must be duly filled indicating the inmates name and ID number. Additionally, money orders will be accepted when you visit an inmate. The facility will not accept any cash money for the pre-trial inmates.
Cash is accepted for sentenced inmates during visits. The money should be given to the prison officer on duty. The money will be placed into the inmates account for use to buy necessities.
You can also send Money Order through the postal services. You can also send cash money through Western Union, American Express, or Money Gram.
Detainees in the detention center will need money to acquire items from the commissary. Necessities such as food and toiletries are not always provided by the facility. In addition, they can use the funds for haircuts, notary services, photocopying, dental, and medical co-pays. Indigent inmates are offered an opportunity to work at the facility and earn up to $2 in a day.
Seeing an Inmate at the Facility
All visitors into the facility should come with a government-issued identification card. The acceptable forms of identification include a military ID, passport, and a driver’s license. Children under the age of 18 will not gain access to the facility unless accompanied by an adult.
Items including briefcases and handbags will not be permitted into the facility. Moreover, the facility does not allow the use of cell phones. Attorneys and clergymen should come with their Bar/Clergy cards or another valid ID. However, the facility will allow lawyers to come with briefcases though they will have to undergo searches.
All inmates will have to stay in prison for seven days before being granted any visits. After the seven days an inmate will be granted visits depending on a certain classification. Pre-trial visits will take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Visits take place from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Monday nights are specifically for women visits.
Pre-trial inmates will get a maximum of 3 visitors during any period of visitation. Nonetheless, there is only one visitor allowed at a time. The other 2 visitors have to stay in the lobby. Sentenced visitation is held on Saturdays from 3:00 pm to 5:00pm for all inmates whose names start with letter A-L. Those whose names start from M-Z will have their visits on Sunday.
Any person who has been convicted will not access to the facility for a period of two months. However, you should take note of the changes in the visiting hours of the facility. The changes take place every few months and you need to confirm before any visitation.
Sending Mail to an Inmate
All mail should be sent directly to the inmate. You should address all mail properly as the facility will not be held liable for any lost mail. Additionally, all incoming mail should have a return address. The facility will not accept any cash sent via mail.
No oversized cards or packages will be sent to pre-trial inmates. Chester County Detention Center does not accept Polaroid pictures. Tobacco usage is strictly prohibited within the facility. Additionally, pornographic material will not be accepted into the facility.
