DeSoto County Jail is in Hernando, Mississippi. It has been operational since 1999. The facility is managed by the Sheriff’s department, and is considered a medium level security prison with the capacity of holding at least 390 inmates.

It comprises five dispatchers, at least seven deputies, an administrator, two financial clerks, and two supervisors. The facility serves the DeSoto County community.

The facility has around 1700 bookings each year, with at least fifty new bookings daily.

Visitation at the Facility

Inmates will be allowed to have visitors while incarcerated at the DeSoto facility. Some factors may pre-determine whether you see the inmate, including:

  • Their current housing
  • Whether they have committed a grievous infraction while incarcerated
  • Special circumstances within the facility including riots and unrest

The facility allows visitors all through the week between 9 am and 6 pm. All visits will be done on a no-contact basis, with a glass partition.

Visiting Rules

  • Government officials visiting an inmate will be required to provide the necessary details to verify their positions. This rule applies to everyone visiting.
  • Children under the age of twelve will not be allowed within the facility, while children between 12-15 years will also be required to bring their birth certificates when they come to prison.
  • No cell phones are allowed in the facility; neither are electronics.
  • Weapons, pocket knives, lighters, and cigarettes are not allowed at the facility.
  • Food and drinks from outside are also not allowed.
  • All visitors will be searched before entering the facility.

Dress code for Visitors

  • Visitors should avoid wearing shorts and open shoes.
  • Visitors are barred from bringing their purses to the facility.
  • Any see-through clothes are also prohibited.
  • The facility will also prohibit shorts, skirts, or dresses above the knee.
  • No headbands, hats, or any head clothes unless they are for a religious reason
  • Pants should not be anywhere under the waistline.
  • All clothes showing violence, gang signs, and obscenities will not also be allowed in.

Who Gets to Visit?

Anyone above eighteen years with a valid ID will get a chance at visiting an inmate, while children under eighteen will require the company of their legal guardians.

Prior felons will not be granted access to the facility.

Anyone failed to have sent back the visitor application form will not be granted access.

Video Visitation

The Desoto facility allows the use of video calling to allow inmates and loved ones to communicate. The facility uses the SmartJailMail.com. Friends and loved ones will have to register on the website and schedule visits.

Rules to Online Video Visitations

  • All on-site video visits should be scheduled 24hours in advance; the visitor can do this through visitfromhome.com.
  • Ensure you store the pin you will be given for your visit, as they are necessary to start a visit.
  • Ensure you arrive at the facility at least the minutes before the scheduled time.
  • Inmates are allowed only two online visitations a week, each lasting twenty minutes.

All mail coming in and going out will be subject to security checks that will involve inspecting the mail for any contraband.

The mail is also required to come in through the US Postal services.

Other than mail, inmates can also receive postcards from friends and loved ones. However, the postcards should be free from any obscene materials, weapons, drugs, and profanity.

Sending Items/Packages

Before sending anything to the facility, ensure you first make a phone call and learn about any specific rules to be followed.

Inmates are allowed a couple of things, including books, magazines, newspapers, and care packages. It is advisable for everyone sending books and magazines over to ensure they send them through a reputable vendor such as Amazon. Newspapers, on the other hand, should come in from the publisher.

Care packages should come in for the inmate in the shape of clothes and seasonal items.

Communication via Phone Calls

DeSoto prison uses Smart Communications services, where friends and loved ones of the inmate register an account and deposit funds for use by the inmate for phone calls. Inmates can also make collect calls and have the tab picked by the receiver.

Inmates will be subject to monitoring while making phone calls to ensure no messages that pose a security threat are passed outside the facility. Inmates will also be limited in terms of the time each inmate is on a call and the allocated time for making phone calls.
