It wouldn’t be until 1789 when the state of Mississippi finally figured out that they were best to start forming their own Department of Corrections. This was one of the first states to get a Department of Corrections finally. During this time, many states didn’t adopt a prison-like system. They didn’t have any rhyme or reason for those who committed crimes in their territory.
The first-ever facility that the Mississippi Department of Corrections used was known as Natchez. This facility was used from the moment it opened until it couldn’t be used anymore. It was in constant use for around 50 or so years.
During this time, the Department of Corrections decided that they needed a new facility. The Natchez facility was starting to look run down in overcrowded. They would finally build a facility in 1840. This facility was with the current times and could hold up to 200 inmates.
Fast forward throughout the decades, the Department of Corrections would continue to build more and more facilities to maintain enough space for the inmate population. Now, the Department of Corrections has many buildings under their belt with many inmates inside of them.
All Department of Correction correctional facilities are licensed by the ACA.
