The Newton Correctional Facility is a medium and low-security prison under the Iowa Department of Corrections (IDOC). Located south of Newton, this detention center holds up to 1,300 in its low-security Correctional Release Center and the medium-security Sexual Offender Treatment Program (SOTP). The Correctional Release Center prepares inmates for discharge, parole, or work release programs. Hence, it offers substance abuse treatment, GED education, and cognitive-behavioral programs. The offenders on work release programs are assigned community service at various state agencies and private sector institutions. In contrast, SOTP provides group therapy and individual counseling to registered sex offenders, helping them deal with the irresponsible behavior that got them to prison in the first place.

Inmate Search

IDOC maintains an in-depth inmate offender database at its official website. This database is updated every week. Here, anyone may search for an inmate by providing the following parameters: –

  • First, middle, and last names
  • Birth date
  • Sex
  • Offender number
  • Location
  • Offense
  • County of Commitment

Provide as much information as possible to narrow the search results to less than a thousand. Otherwise, you may have to refill the search query. The offender search results include: –

  • Offender’s full names
  • Offender number
  • Birth date
  • Sex

Under the offender’s full names, there is a link that provides the following additional information: –

  • Current location
  • Tentative Discharge Date/Supervision Discharge Date
  • Commitment date
  • Recall date
  • Charges

However, if your inmate search via the online portal and not successful, you may call the Central Office at 515-725-5701 to inquire.

Sending a Mail Package/ Sending Email

Inmates at the Newton Correctional Facility may receive a letter, mail package, or email from their family and friends who are on the approved members’ list. Still, the mail package should comply with the inmate mail and package guidelines. Here, the prison officials open, inspect, and read all incoming inmate correspondence for security purposes. And contraband or unauthorized mail will be rejected. Then, address the letter or package to the inmate as follows: –

Next, IDOC uses Corrlinks to facilitate offender e-messaging services.  Here, anyone who wants to get in touch with an inmate via email should sign up and create an active email account. Then, use your MasterCard or VISA card to fund the service.

IDOC has a centralized offender banking unit at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility (FDCF) that manages all inmate funds.  If you wish to deposit funds to an inmate account, make your cashier’s check or money order payable to IDOC Offender Fiduciary Account. Here, quote the offender’s full names, offender number, your name, and your complete physical address. Then, address the deposit slip as follows:
