The correctional facility was founded in 1968 and was initially used as an intake and processing center for incoming male state offenders and a secure medical center. This facility has a capacity of about 1148 inmates and serves the city of Lake Butler and surrounding smaller towns. Inmates awaiting transfers to other facilities are also temporarily held here.
