There are eight Maricopa county detention facilities, all of which are in Phoenix, Arizona. The county jail’s official website can provide you with easy access to a ton of information, including neighborhood crimes, video visitation, and even pet adoption.

The most secure building is the one located on 4th Avenue. It houses the inmates that need the most security. The facility has about 2,064 beds and 1,152 cells. Out of those, 288 are designed for holding the highest level of security needing inmates.

Their policies are listed as well. There are procedures for everything you need to know under “Detention Policies and Procedures”,

Maricopa also offers plenty of events that are designed to assist offenders in bettering themselves and making the most of their time in the facility.

What stands out the most, is the M.A.S.H. program. This service allows neglected or abused animals to find a new, happy home. The pets are nurtured back to full health and given to inmates, allowing them to practice valuable skills and work.

Need to Do an Inmate Search?

The county jail’s official website does not have an inmate search function at this time. You will need to call them directly at the information line. This number is 602 876 0322 if you want to inquire about an inmate.

If you know the inmate has an attorney, they can be contacted for locating them. Otherwise, you will want to call the county jail directly.

How to Send Mail

If you want to send mail to an inmate, it will need to be a standard postcard. Other types of mail can not be sent, this is to ensure the safety of inmates and staff.

When you mail your letter, address it like the following:

  • Inmate’s first and last name, then their booking number at the top
  • Lower Buckeye Jail
  • 3250 West Lower Buckeye Road
  • Phoenix, AZ 85009

If you are sending mail, please be sure to include the above information. You will want the inmate’s name to be on the top left of the envelope or postcard, ensure it is displayed clearly.

Not including a return address puts your letter at risk of not getting to the intended person. You should only use blue or black ink.

Envelopes can not be received unless they are from the inmate’s officially recorded attorney. Printed materials, such as magazines or newspapers, are allowed if they are sent directly from the publisher to the building.

How to Send Money

If you want to deposit money into an inmate’s account, you can use the TouchPay system kiosks offered at each facility. You can add money to the inmate’s account easily using their name or booking number. The machines accept cash, VISA, and MasterCard.

Money can also be sent by calling the county jail directly. Be sure that you have the inmate’s information available to add the money efficiently.

And finally, you can add money to an inmate’s account online. The company the jail uses to run the website will charge you a small fee, so be sure to keep that in mind. You can find it on their official website.

How Phone Calls Work

The inmate telephone system allows outgoing inmate calls, but not incoming ones. This means that an inmate can make calls, but not receive them. They will have access to a phone between 7:30 am and 10:00 pm. Calls can only be 20 minutes.

If the inmate does not have your phone number, you can call the jail and ask staff to give them your number. They will need it since only outgoing calls are allowed.

Please remember that all personal inmate calls are recorded.

What the Commissary Has

Candy and other snacks are available. Plus, there is a selection of hygiene products and clothing items that can be purchased. Stationary and art materials are also housed there.

Shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, and other essential healthcare items can be purchased from the commissary. Providing an inmate with funds through an on-location kiosk or through the facility’s website allows them to purchase the goods that they need.

Visitation Rules

Online visitation can happen as often as you would like, while on-site visits have to be between 9 am and 5 pm once a week. Setting up online visits is simple, all you need to do is visit their official website.

If you want to visit an inmate in person, you will need to call the jail to schedule a meeting.
